The name Hawaiʻiloa pays homage to Puʻu Hawaiʻiloa, a cinder cone located at Mōkapu, Kāneʻohe, Oʻahu. While currently occupied by the Marine Corps Base, Mōkapu and Puʻu Hawaiʻiloa were traditionally highly sacred grounds.
